The Best Possible Way to Combine a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro, Ever.

I've got both a 15" MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro. I've also got a tiny desk (about 6 sq ft), so it's been tough getting the two together in the same workspace. Until now.

The trick is simply turning the MBP on its side. Teleport lets me control both computers with the same keyboard and mouse, and MacFlip automates screen rotation using the built-in accelerometer. A few Divvy shortcuts keep my windows organized when everything goes vertical. Since I use GeekTool, I whipped up a few super-simple scripts to switch groups when I turn the MBP. Lastly, MacDropAny creates symbolic links that sync my desktop and vital files between the machines. It's "flipping" awesome.

So far, the only modification will be the installation of an SSD in the MBP, since the platters in an HDD can't much handle being sideways (according to Chris Traweek on flickr). Also a worth it for 3x faster boot times.

I could also see this working quite well with a MBP and Apple Display.

Here's the pieces of the puzzle, if you want to do this for yourself:

Mac Pro + MacBook Pro

(If you're just using an MBP, ignore steps 1 and 4)

1) Install Teleport on both machines, and setup keyboard and mouse sharing over WiFi

2) Install MacFlip on the MacBook Pro, and calibrate it using Seismacalibrate to make sure it knows which way is up

3) Install Divvy on the MBP, and setup shortcuts so you can resize all of your windows for the new orientation with ease

4) Get MacDropAny onto both machines, and create symbolic links between the two.

Optional

GeekTool lets you put passive widgets permanently on your desktop

FastScripts lets you assign keyboard shortcuts to scripts that control your GeekTool “Geeklet” groups

Minium Icon Set looks super cool

CandyBar Icon Customization  lets you use the aforementioned Icon set with ease.

Here’s the super basic script to control GeekTool Groups.

set twitterGroup to group "Horizontal"

set visible of twitterGroup to true #true for on, false for off

end tell
